| PAUL RANSON (illustrator). A.-Ferdinand Herold. "Le Livre de la Naissance, de la Vie et de la Mort de la Bienheureuse Vierge Marie." Paris: Mercure de France, 1895. Pp.(ii),114,(5), illustrated by Paul Ranson with large (7-12 lines apiece) historiated initials, one to each of the 55 brief chapters of this "légende," narrating the Virgin Mary's life in pictures, and paralleling the text. None of the initials is repeated, telling as they do a story; notwithstanding their employment as initials, these are in fact book illustrations, and they stand as one of the finest examples, however obscure, of Nabis book design. The crest of an initial "A" appears to be covered in snow, a shepherd and his flock below; Joseph appears from behind a "J" that incorporates Hebrew symbols; a glorious "Q" occupies more of the page than the text, and depicts Mary and Elisabeth conversing in a garden; Herod and his priest, within an "O," cast worried glances at the heavens; Herod dreams within an "H," an angel hovering over him; a panther prostrates itself before the Christ child, one of the pair outside the initial "C," one inside. Bound in three-quarter morocco, marbled paper sides (covers detached, spine stripped, the lower outer corner of the front marbled paper endpaper missing, corners of covers rubbed, the edges of the text stock a little browned and slightly brittle; a copy in need of rebinding). A rare book. Paul-Élie Ranson (Limoges, 1864 - Paris, 1909). "Figlio del sindaco di Limoges, frequenta l'École des Beaux-Arts della città natale e quindi quella di Parigi. Nel 1888 entra all'Académie Julian dove conosce gli artisti che con lui daranno vita al gruppo dei Nabis, che tiene le prime riunioni nel suo atelier del boulevard Montparnasse, ribattezzato 'Le Temple,' oltre che nel ristorante del Passage Brady. Dalla prima esposizione del 1891 alla galleria 'Le Barc de Boutteville,' prende parte a tutte le mostre dei Nabis. Nel proprio atelier realizza un teatro di marionette, i cui personaggi sono scolpiti da M. Denis e G. Lacombe, per il quale scrive sette tésti raccolti nel 1902 nel volume 'L'Abbé Prout, Guignol Pour les Vieux Enfants,' da lui anche illustrato. E autore di alcune litografie, tra cui figura la celebre 'Le Tigre dans la Jungle' a tre colori, inclusa nel 1893 nella raccolta 'L'Estampe Originale,' che con le sue linee sinuose e i suoi arabeschi rappresenta uno dei piu noti incunaboli della grafica Art Nouveau. Altre sue litografie sono apparse in 'La Revue Blanche' (1894-95), 'Le Centaure' (1896) e 'La Revue Encyclopédique' (1897). E inoltre autore delle copertine litografiche dei programmi delle rappresentazioni della 'Farce du Paté' (1892), un testo del XV secolo, e delle 'Sept Princesses' di M. Maeterlinck (1892). Altri libri da lui illustrati sono: A.-F Hérold, 'Le Livre de la Naissance, de la Vie et de la Mort de la Bienheureuse Vierge Marie,' 1895; A.-F. Hérold, 'Paphnutius,' 1895; A. Jarry, 'Le Moutardier du Pape,' 1907. La sua produzione comprende vari cartoni per tappezzerie realizzate da sua moglie.
