NEOCLASSICAL WINDOW SEAT

A continental neo-classical window bench, 40" wide, 16" deep, 24" high (to the top rail; 16" to the seat top), the close-nailed padded seat covered in yellow- and beige-banded silk, the seat rail with a cane twist motif, the seat flanked by leaf-tip carved fluted uprights and stretchers, on tapering leaf-tip carved fluted legs headed by carved flowerhead paterae; late eighteenth century. The label stapled to the fabric underside reads, "Custom tailored by Ernie Ganz Wilton Upholstery," "Apr 91" written next to this. The bench shows minimal wear and restoration: the curled terminus of one seat post has an irregular 1 1/2" hairline fracture, a repair perhaps associated with this; the same terminus has a bead of glue projecting from where the post is attached to the stretcher, indicating a repair; a second seat post has a small quantity of wood filler in the upper portion of one flute, the filled area extending to the ring turnings just above it; one of the stretchers has a carving defect in that a fluting was begun, carved for approximately one inch and then abandoned in favor of an alternative spacing arrangement (the stretcher, like its mate, with eight flutes); the ring turning surmounting one of the two medial legs is missing a 5/8" x 3/8" piece; the six legs' lower portions bear signs of incidental wear (from foot traffic) in that they are nicked and scuffed, the lowest ring turning on two of the legs quite worn around a small portion of their circumference. There is slight, incidental wear elsewhere on the bench, which is structurally sound and usable. Our careful examination of this fine neo-classical window seat suggests that it is in nearly original condition.
