| GORDON GRANT. Untitled watercolor on off-white wove paper, 11 5/8" x 16 5/8" (image), 12" x 17 1/2" (sheet), the composition in red, pink, blue, green and brown; signed ("Gordon Grant") lower right. A three-masted ship occupies the midground, a rowboat with three men the left foreground, a headland the left midground, the ocean quite calm, the sky tinged with pink. The sheet has been removed from an old frame whose matt covered a portion of the image; exposed to light, over time all but that portion of the drawing covered by the matt faded. Specifically, an area measuring 11 3/8" x 13 5/8" is affected: the medium blue in the ocean has faded to dull brown, the light blue wash in the sky has nearly faded away, the purple-brown in the rocky headland has dulled. The unfaded portion along the left edge of the image (that portion covered by the previous frame's matt) measures 11 1/4" x 2" wide; the unfaded portion along the right edge of the image measures 11 1/4" x 3/4" wide; a strip along the lower edge of the composition, upwards to 1/4" wide, is unfaded; the sheet was matted to the top edge of the composition, therefore no color differential exists there. Grant's signature is somewhat faded. Five minute (approx. 1mm. diameter) brown spots along the lower edge of the image. An approximately 1/2" wide strip of brown paper tape to each edge of the sheet, verso. Undated. Unframed. Either the color will need to be evened out by a restorer, or the image rematted with window dimensions identical to those in the frame the watercolor was recently removed from. Gordon Grant, 1875-1962, well known marine painter. | ||||||||||
