AMERICAN CARVED WOOD SCULPTURE

DAVID HOWARD DAY. Untitled white-painted, carved wood sculpture, 7 1/2" high, 9 3/4" long, 5 3/4" wide, the torso appearing to rise from the water, the hair swept back in stylized waves that are effectively viewed both from the side and from the rear; attached to a similarly white-painted wood base, 11" long, 6 12/" wide, 3/4" high (the attachment apparently with adhesive, as there are no screws, nails, etc. on the underside of the base), the underside of the base inscribed (in block capitals), "David Howard Day." The paint is checked in places from the figure's forehead back over the top of her head, one small (approx. 1/4" x 1/4") piece of paint missing from the top of the head, a smaller piece of paint missing from the back of the head; there are a few small imperfections to the carved surface itself, which the sculptor chose to ignore and paint over; small pieces of paint missing from the wood base. The sculpture weighs approximately seven pounds. No date; probably, a work from the second third of the twentieth century. We have no information on the artist.
