AMERICAN FIGURATIVE ABSTRACTION, 1950

S. GRUENBERG. Oil on canvas, 28" x 22", in red, green, yellow, orange, brown and purple, of a seated woman holding a bouquet of flowers; signed ("S. Gruenberg") lower right corner and dated ("1950") below this, both in red, and signed ("S. Greenberg") above the first signature, in black, both signatures in block capitals. In a simple wood lattice frame, the 1 1/4"-wide piece that was the frame's bottom edge having been replaced at some point with a narrower piece of wood. Three small areas of paint loss (each approx. 3/16" x 1/8") in the purple-painted portion of the canvas, upper left quadrant; smaller areas of paint loss (each approx. 1/8" diameter) in the purple paint just to the right of the subject's head; one area of paint loss (approx. 1/16" square) to the left of the subject's neck; two areas of paint loss (each approx. 1/4" x 1/16") to the right of her neck; slight checking to the paint within this purple-painted portion of the canvas. Two areas of paint loss (each approx. 1/4" x 1/8") to the red paint (in the chair back); several other areas of paint loss (each approx. 1mm.-2mm. in diameter) in the same area. We have no information on the artist.
