INTIMATE FAMILY PORTRAIT, 1940s

MINNA KAREN. Oil on canvas, 22" x 30", the composition in violet, red, blues, greens, yellow, browns and flesh tones; signed ("Minna K.") in the upper right corner. Some paint loss to the face of the male figure, the upper layer of the flesh tone (that is, the underpaint is still present and is the same tone) missing adjacent to his eye (approx. 1" x 1/2"), adjacent to his nose (approx. 3/8" x 1/4"), above his lip (minute pieces) and above his chin (minute pieces). (These losses are difficult to detect, even when the painting is held up to strong light.) An area approx. 3/4" x 1/2" on the man's chest is either lightly painted or has suffered minor paint loss. A quantity of minute checkmarks to the paint surface are present, but are visible only when the painting is held up to strong light. An intimate family portrait. No date; probably, a work from the 1940s. Unframed. Provenance: estate of the artist. Minna Karen, ca. 1920 - ca. 2005, active in New York City and on Long Island, 1940s-1980s.
