| MINNA KAREN. "Flight." Oil on canvas, 40" x 30", the composition in blues, browns, greens, reds and off-white; signed ("Minna") lower right, signed ("M. Karen") on the stretcher and titled there ("Flight"), and with the artist's Hicksville, NY address inscribed there. Clean, narrow one-inch tear to the canvas, 2 5/8" from the left edge of the canvas, center; a slightly faded and rubbed area along the right edge of the composition, 2" from the edge of the canvas (26" long, between 1/16" wide (at its top) and 1/4" wide (at its bottom)), probably the result of another painting being leaned against this canvas in storage; one or two small (approx. 1/8" - 1/4" diameter) areas of paint loss to the extreme outer edge of the canvas; a minor (though visible) scratch, 4" long and approx. 1-2mm. wide within the lower left quadrant (near a red-painted building below the figures); approx. 1/8" diameter hole in the canvas immediately adjacent to the moon (the painting is backed by its stretcher here); a slight amount of checking to the painted surface, visible when the canvas is held up to strong light. An extraordinary composition, of two figures ascending through the night sky, splashes of light around them, the moon along the upper edge of the composition, a large bridge below the figures, an expressionistically rendered cityscape adjacent to it. No date; probably, a work from the 1940s. We assume the city represented here is New York. An early work. Unframed. Provenance: estate of the artist. Minna Karen, ca. 1920 - ca. 2005, active in New York City and on Long Island, 1940s-1980s. | |||||||
