"CIRCUS" BY NEW YORK ARTIST MINNA KAREN

MINNA KAREN. "Circus." Oil on canvas, 22" x 28", the composition in yellow, reds, blues, greens, orange, flesh tones and brown; signed indistinctly, lower right, titled ("Circus") on the stretcher. In the artist's 3/8"-wide silver-painted wood frame. Six figures dominate the mid-ground, including what appear to be dancers, a clown and a youth on a woman's back; a pair of acrobats are discernible in the left background. The coloring of the figures integrates them closely with the mid-ground and background. The canvas bears two pressure-marked areas, near the upper right corner and near the lower right corner, respectively approx. 5" x 2" and approx. 5" x 5", the result of the canvas having been stored improperly. There is no point loss, tearing or abrading associated with these depressions, which correspond approximately to the corners of the stretcher. The painted surface displays innumerable hairline fractures when held up to strong light; however, this checking is not visible when the picture is flat against a wall. No date; probably, a work from the 1950s. Provenance: estate of the artist. Minna Karen, ca. 1920 - ca. 2005, active in New York City and on Long Island, 1940s-1980s.
