| MINNA KAREN. Untitled oil on masonite panel, a diptych, 27 7/8" x 22 3/8" (each panel measures 27 7/8" x 11"), the composition in green, gray, violet and off-white; signed ("Minna K.") in the lower left corner of the left panel and dated ("56") there. In the artist's attractive 1/4"-wide wood lattice shadow box frame, each of the two panels mounted on smaller panels and set within a recess with black-painted and off-white-painted surrounds. Slight paint loss (pieces approx. 1/8" diameter and smaller) to the outermost edge of both panels; a larger (3/4" x 1/4") affected area at the right edge of the right panel, near the upper corner, the damage (which is slight and unobtrusive) probably the result of something hitting the panel; minor stain, 1 1/8" x 3/8" (max.) to the lower edge center, of the right panel. A landscape from the artist's best period of abstraction. Provenance: estate of the artist. Minna Karen, ca. 1920 - ca. 2005, active in New York City and on Long Island, 1940s-1980s. | |||||
