CARICATURE OF GEORGE MOORE (1852-1933)
"SIMPSON." Charcoal drawing on a watercolor wash ground, a caricature of George Moore, on off-white, laid, Ingres paper (so watermarked), 8 1/2" x 4 3/4" (image), 18 7/8" x 11 7/8" (sheet); signed ("Simpson") lower right, just outside the image. The drawing is against a dull gray wash ground (measuring 11 1/4" x 8 3/4"). A pencil annotation ("George Moore") in the lower left corner of the sheet identifies the subject. Three-quarter inch tear to the lower edge of the sheet, center; four spots of foxing just outside the image (near the rear of the subject's head), a few foxmarks near the edges of the sheet, a few pinholes in the corners of the sheet, soft creasing to the sheet, slight soiling to the sheet, the verso of the sheet somewhat darkened. Unframed. Undated; probably, ca. 1910 - ca. 1925. We have not identified the artist, but offer the names of Charles Simpson (1885-1971) and Charles Walter Simpson (1885-1942) as possible authors of the drawing. George Moore, 1852-1933, author of, among numerous others, "Martin Luther," "A Mummer's Wife," "A Drama in Muslin," "Confessions of a Young Man," "Esther Waters," "The Bending of the Bow," "Sister Teresa," "The Untitled Field," "'Hail and Farewell!,'" "The Brook Kerith," "Heloise and Abelard," "Avowals," "Aphrodite in Aulis."
