CIRCUS SCULPTURE: A MELANCHOLY CLOWN, SEATED

Seated Clown. Hollow-cast ceramic sculpture, 12 1/2" high, 12" long, 11" deep, the figure with crossed legs bent at the knees, one leg horizontal, one leg vertical, the melancholy figure's hand and head resting on the one knee; impressed signature at the base of the figure in the rear, "Peggy Thac" (the last name may well be something other than this, as it is difficult to read), copyright mark adjacent to the signature. The sculpture weighs approximately 14 pounds. A piece of felt covers the bottom of the sculpture, enclosing the hollow interior. The thickness of the sides at the base is 1 1/2" - 2"; judging from the work's weight, the walls throughout are thick and the hollow cavity, therefore, quite small. Two small (each approx. 1/8" diameter) areas of glaze loss at the tip of one foot's slipper, and two other smaller areas of glaze loss there; two small (approx. 1/2" x 1/16" and approx. 3/8" x 1/16") areas of glaze loss to the tip of the other foot's slipper; two small (each approx. 1/8" x 1/8") areas of glaze loss to the figure's left shoulder, and a few minute areas of glaze loss to his back; otherwise, in fine condition. No date; probably, second half of the twentieth century.
