MEXICAN FOLK WATERCOLOR ON HANDMADE PAPER

DAVID LOPEZ. Black ink and gouache on thick, fibrous handmade paper, 20 3/8" x 13 1/8" (image), 24 1/4" x 16 1/4" (sheet), the composition in blue, yellows, greens, red, orange, brown and pink, the domestic activities associated with farming showing ten individuals at work, a river running through the composition, plants growing, the sun dominating an orange sky, the composition with a double border, the inner of diamond shapes, the outer of sunflowers joined by leafy tendrils, a pen-drawn quadruple rule frame around the entire composition; signed ("David Lopez") lower right, in ink. Some soiling to the sheet of stout handmade paper, recto, primarily restricted to the blank margins; an approx. one-inch diameter spot of darkening in either blank upper corner (showing through to the recto), where the sheet was attached (probably with paste) to a backboard no longer present; slight darkening, verso of sheet; soft creasing throughout the sheet, endemic to the hand papermaking process. Unframed. No date (probably, from the 1960s or 1970s).
