MEXICAN FOLK WATERCOLOR ON HANDMADE PAPER

CRECENCIO DE JESUS. Black ink and gouache on thick, fibrous handmade paper, 21 5/8" x 14 1/2" (image), 23 7/8" x 16 3/8" (sheet), the composition in blue, yellow, purple, greens, pink, browns and orange, showing a number of individuals at work (balancing cargo on their heads, carrying water, wielding an axe), a large palm tree with buildings beneath it dominating the center of the composition, a boat- and fish-filled body of water occupying its lower quarter, all within a broad ruled and decorated border; signed ("Crecencio de Jesus") lower right, in ink. Some soiling to the sheet of stout, handmade paper, recto, primarily restricted to the blank margins; an approximately one-inch diameter spot of darkening in either blank upper corner of the sheet (showing through to the recto), where the sheet was attached (probably with paste) to a backboard no longer present; one short (1/2") tear to the right edge of the sheet, lower center; one piece (approx. 1/4" square) missing from the center right edge of the sheet, another piece (approx. 1/4" square) missing from the upper left edge of the sheet, both of these small defects perhaps endemic to the sheet, which is roughly made; verso of sheet stained over approximately two-thirds of its area, though this stain does not show on the recto except when the sheet is held up to the strongest light; soft creases to the sheet, a result of the hand papermaking process. Unframed. No date (probably, from the 1960s or 1970s).
