Watercolor on off-white wove paper, 7 3/8" x 10 1/4" (image and sheet), a fox hunt, three top-hatted riders on their mounts in the foreground, the three facing the midground of the picture, where their colleagues are following hounds in full pursuit of the fox who is ready to duck under the fence at the left center edge of the composition, a group of trees left and right, hills in the background, the composition in greens, browns, red, black, blue and white. A narrow (2mm.-wide) strip of darkening along the length of the sheet (1" from the upper edge, through the sky), similar strips of darkening down the left edge (1/4" from the edge of the sheet) and right edge (3/4" from the edge of the sheet) of the composition, all three strips from a former matting / framing; upper right corner of sheet slightly creased; tape remains to the upper outer corners, verso of sheet, which is slightly soiled. On the verso of the sheet: two ink sketches of horses. Unsigned. Unframed. Probably, English, circa 1850-1875. Some discoloration to the sky (2" - 3" from the sheet's upper edge), at least a portion of which is from foxing; an old matt formerly framed the composition tightly, narrow bands of darkening left by the matt on the upper edge (1 1/4" from the upper edge of the sheet), the left edge (3/8" from the edge of the sheet), and the right edge (1/2" from the edge of the sheet) of the composition, the left edge of the composition with a second narrow band of darkening (1 3/4" from the edge of the sheet), apparently from a second former matt; the sky in the exposed (unmatted) portion of the watercolor slightly faded; tape remains in the upper outer corners, verso of sheet; some foxing and soiling, verso of sheet.
