Henry Alken Sporting Watercolor

HENRY ALKEN. Watercolor on off-white wove paper, 6 3/8" x 8 3/8" (image and sheet), the composition of a fox hunter and hounds, the latter in the process of being released from their pen by a second man, the pen adjoining a cottage, an old tree in its yard, in greens, browns, red and blue; signed ("H. Alken") at the base of the composition, center-left. Slight damage to the watercolor surface at the base of the sheet, the affected area (plants and grass, both in brown) approximately 1/2" x 1/4"; a band of brown paper tape borders the sheet, recto, ranging from 1mm. - 2mm. in width (left edge of sheet) to 2mm. - 3mm. in width (upper edge of sheet, lower edge of sheet) to 1mm. - 3mm. in width (right edge of sheet) (the tape may be either removed by a conservator, covered by a new matt, or trimmed off (with the sheet, of course, and that small portion of the image which it covers); several paper tape remains to the corners, upper edge and lower edge, verso of sheet. Unframed. Two nineteenth-century sporting artists bore the name Henry Alken, father (1785-1851) and son (1810-1894); we guess that the watercolor offered here is by the latter.
