WILLIAM GLACKENS. Charcoal drawing on beige, wove, watermarked ("Old Peerage") paper, 6" x 3 1/4" (image), 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" (sheet), the sheet with deckle edge on three sides; signed ("Glackens") in pencil, lower right. A narrow (2mm.-wide) strip of darkening from a former matt 1/8" from the left edge of the sheet, 1/8" from the right edge of the sheet and 3/8" from the top edge of the sheet; some soft creasing to the sheet; slight tape remains along the upper edge, verso of sheet. Undated. Unframed. William Glackens (1870-1938): studied Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Europe; Member: Associate Member, National Academy of Design (1906), National Academy of Design (1933), Society of Illustrators (1902), Society of American Artists (1905), Association of American Painters and Sculptors, National Association of Portrait Painters, Society of Independent Artists, Groupe des Peintres et Sculpteurs American de Paris; Exhibitions: Pan-American Exposition, Buffalo (1901), St. Louis Exposition (1904), Carnegie Institute, Panama Pacific International Exposition, San Francisco (1915), Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, many others; Collections: Corcoran Gallery of Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Modern Art, Art Institute of Chicago, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Barnes Foundation, many others. Member of The Eight; one of the organizers of the Armory Show and chairman of the committee that selected American entries; received the Grand Prix for painting at the 1937 Paris International exhibition.
