Banjo timepiece by William Cummens

William Cummens (1768-1834)was apprenticed to Simon Willard along with another well-known maker, Elnathan Taber. His career in Roxbury spanned between 1788-1834. He made a variety of clocks, including tall case clocks, and shelf clocks and banjos. He may have been the first and only person to whom Simon gave permission to make and sell his "Patent Timepieces" (banjo clocks), which may why he signed his banjos "Warranted by Wm. Cummens". His timepieces were distinguished by the use of the "T" bridge and the through bolt mounting, a trait ordinarily only associated his master, Simon. This with the "Aurora" classic theme makes for a special air of quality with bright colors and lively graphics. Photos of the dial before restoration are available. The finial (not original) and with a crack in the original throat glass and some restorations to the original pendulum glass. Measuring 33" in height, this example features half round mahogany moldings enclosing two reverse painted tablets. It might date after 1825. The dial has been restored, but we have archive photos of the dial in its as found condition. The tablets are original with some restorations.
