| This French clock dates 1805-1825, the Empire era. The clockworks, recently cleaned were cleaned, oiled and repaired here, have the silk string suspension and count wheel strike, two mechanical aspects were used in France clock only before 1840. The very fine castings and high quality workmanship are typical of that era as well. When we bought the clock the gold finish was dirty from years of disuse, so we cleaned- not replated- those fire gilt mounts to discover the original surface beauty. The patinated bronze case parts also retain those rich tonal qualities that are only found on original old surfaces. The left hand urn "handle" has been repaired, something that can be seen in the detail photo; there might have been a lid on the back of the clock (some had such lids to keep dust out) but there is no lid now.
