| James Bolton never succeeded in achieving the notoriety and fame of fellow countrymen like John Gould or John Selby, but his one and only known ornithological work was good science and his observations enlightening. More importantly, his illustrations indicating the birds in their environment are as charming and effective as one could hope for. James Bolton (1733-1799) was an English painter, illustrator & naturalist who lived around Halifax for his entire life. He was an avid student of the flora & fauna of the field and published a book on ferns & another on fungi before creating what is surely his masterpiece, the Harmonia Ruralis. Our Pair of prints are page 61 Pettychaps and page 63 Green Wren. Mr. Bolton even charmingly includes the birds' insect diet. The plate marks are strong and there is some foxing as can be seen by the photos. Each print measures approximately 8 3/4 inches by 11 3/4 inches. The relevant original descriptive text is included on the back of the Pettychaps print. Sight 7 1/2 x 9 1/2, Frame 9 1/2 x 11 1/2" | |||||
