SHELL DECORATED MIRROR

We think the art of shell decoration in the nineteenth century was popular in both America and England. It is believed that the fashion was to purchase the frames, gather the shells and then arrange and glue them on in an artistic manner. Shell art artifacts are popular because they are an art form that is personal and intimate in nature. This mirror could also be a picture frame, and could be displayed as a wall hanging or easel form desk or table piece. The mirror that came with it is either a replacement or substitute for a lost photograph. An advanced skill of shell arrangement is shown here, especially with the finding of and arrangement of the snail-like shells around the inner edge of the frame, of which we know of no such existing species today.
