| A rare English Georgian glass dating to the mid 18th century. A funnel bowl with solid base; above a hollow blown stem and then onto a conical foot with a deep polished pontil. Height: 4 11/16” Rim: Just under 2 1/8” Foot: 2 ¼” Good condition with light wear to the bearing surface of the foot and good tooling marks to the foot edge. As a reaction to the glass excise act of 1745 a range of hollow stem glasses was produced. All of these glasses are beautifully produced and all are scarce; however it is more usual to encounter a standard sized wine glass of approx 6”. This short wine or dram glass is much more rare; due naturally to its size, but also because of the polished pontil. This shows pumice haze as evidence of period production and is quite unusual for a drinking glass of this date, though the practice of cutting and polishing of glass had commenced in England much before this. A rare glass. | ||
