C1690 Rare English 17th Century Gadrooned Ale Glass
A very rare and early English lead ale glass dating to the latter part of the 17th century; C1690-1700. The glass naturally showing façon de Venise influence. A wide round funnel bowl with heavy wrythen gadrooning; over a stem with a lightly incised shoulder knop and a basal knop before the high stepped and lightly domed and folded foot with rough pontil. Primitive English lead glass with a multitude of inclusions; and un-burst bubbles to the foot. A couple of relatively larger pieces of un-melted silica just above the gadrooning to one side of the bowl; causing (and only seen under magnification) three minute cracks around the larger inclusion. This is known as a ‘blown seed’ and occurs occasionally on early glass. A very rare and early ale glass in perfectly original condition. Height: 5 3/8” Rim: 2 7/16” Foot: 2 7/8” Though similar to English 18th century flammiform, gadrooned and wrythen ale glasses; the early examples are very distinctive with their primitive metal, wide bowls and heavy moulding. A similar example can be seen in Bickerton plate 50.
