| Prior to the current fine product we enjoy today; sugar was a course sweetener that was dispensed in solid ‘cones’. Sugar nippers were used to nip a portion of sugar from the cone and when sugar was used to sweeten a beverage such as a toddy, the sugar was immersed in the liquid in the bowl of a glass and a sugar crusher such as this would be used to crush the course material much in the same way that a pestle and mortar might be used, held by the flattened end. Clear glass examples are common; colour twist examples are rarely seen. This example has a white opaque twist corkscrew edged in blue with a red core; a small rough pontil mark can be seen to the flattened end. Just under 5” long and in perfect condition. | ||
