C1740 Very Finely Engraved Bohemian Silesian Tumbler
A beautifully engraved tumbler dating to C1740 and originating from the Silesian area of what was then Bohemia. Made from fine quality soda glass the tumbler has a slightly everted form and is covered in engraving of the highest quality; befitting its area of origin. There are two each of the two types of engraved fields; a zig-zag design surmounted by a basket of flowers and a curtain like scrolled field. Each type of engraved field opposes its mirror image on the opposite side of the tumbler. The base of the tumbler is cut with flat olives and these are highlighted by cut arches with supports. The tumbler has a small applied foot with a polished pontil. Height: 3 11/16” Rim: 3 1/8” Foot: 1 13/16” The tumbler is in superb original condition. The engraving is of excellent quality; the finishing to the underside of the foot is fascinating and demonstrates high production standards. The pontil and the area just outside of this leading out to the foot edge have been shaped and polished with a small wheel. There is good genuine wear to the bearing surface of the foot and there are tiny marks to the outer foot edge that correspond with the cut olives to the base of the bowl; where the wheel has touched the foot when cutting. Great to see; and evidence that the foot is entirely original. A superb and usable piece of period glass in original condition.
