Very large black doll circa 1924 handmade in Demorest Georgia by Mrs. Shanks who made these dolls 2 or 3 at a time and sold them to the Rich’s Department Store in Atlanta where they were quite popular, but scarce. They were made and sold in a limited capacity between 1922-1928.
The doll had one owner who has had her on display in a controlled environment all these years.
She is 24” tall, machine sewn with all details hand sewn. Interesting strap to hold her legs somewhat together. Her clothes are all original and I don’t think they have been taken off before. Her lips are red but not as red as pictures make it. Her hair is real horse hair. She has applied ears with screw back earrings. She is firmly stuffed with cotton and is jointed at the shoulders and hips so she sits easily. She is a big imposing black doll with great history.
