This black doll is a Sunday best. She is 24" and has a magnificent embroidered facial features. To see the stitching for the nose you need a magnifying glass. She has an abundance of black unraveled yarn hair as well as embroidered hair that frames her face. She is most unusual and comes from Nantucket Island. Her body is formed with an heavy wire frame that allows her to be shaped into a sitting or standing positions. Over the frame is padding. Her face is black sateen fabric and the rest of her body is stockinette. She is a formal doll and has on an early wool two piece dress with a petticoat underneath. The dress fits her very well but isn't original. It is sewn on her so I can't take pictures of the body but I have looked and can pretty much see that her arms and legs and head are original. She is very firmly stuffed with I am not sure what. She is heavy and firm and dates to the 1880's She is a very special black doll.
