A Magnificent Wood Carving of Soulao
A huge wood figure was well carved by traditional craftsmanship from a huge block of Longan wood. Longan wood was a kind of hard wood popularly used in southern China and only next to the famous boxwood. Being depicted as the most popular deity of Soulao-the Longevity, the amiable old man was wearing a flouring robe when holding in the right hand with a knarled stick and a Longevity Peach in the left hand. The holy peach was then intriguingly carved in a hollowed root wood style. By a wonderful look and charming brownish patina, the Soulao figure was decently standing in a very good condition. The frit and abrasions were very limited. It exemplified the traditional Chinese wood carving skills and the scholar taste in a wonderful way. Date: Qing Dynasty(19th century), Height: 54cm. Material: Longan wood. A Custom-Made Silk Box Is Included.
