| A very nice Chinese Bi shaped disc decorated with two low relief chilongs (immature dragons) in S form on one side and around-the-clock engraved pattern on the reverse. Handsome nephrite jade in a charming jade color with nice patina. Measures 1 3/4" diameter and is just over 1/4" thick. Qing dynasty (17-19th C). Good condition. The jade bi pendant indicated the status of court official/nobleman. The single piece round bi is thought to have represented Round Heaven. The Bi is a flat round piece in shape of a disc with a cross formed hole in the center. The whole section view looks like “(”. It was originally used as a ritual vessel to offer sacrifice to the God of heaven, but gradually lost its ritual function in thousands of years' development. It appeared more decorative later with fine workmanship and beautiful designs. | |
