| Lyman Byxbe is one of many great artists who have turned to the majestic Rocky Mountains for inspiration and the subject matter of their compositions. He became a successful commercial artist in Omaha, Nebraska, where he studied the art of etching under Mark Levings, an architect. In 1938 Mr. Byxbe moved to Estes Park, Colorado, where he has had a summer studio for many years. Most of the artist's time and talent was devoted to copper plate etching in his mountain studio; however, Byxbe's rarer works include watercolors, oils, and prints. Here is a beautiful example of Byxbe's work in a generous 4 1/2 by 5 1/2 size and 11 1/2 by 13 1/2 overall size with frame. Lyman Byxbe has been honored by membership in the Chicago Society of Etchers, Miniature Print Society of Kansas City, Missouri, and Northwest Printmakers of Seattle, Washington. He is represented in the permanent collections in Washington D.C. of the National Gallery of Arts, at the Smithsonian Institute and the Library of Congress. The piece is signed by Byxbe, numbered 34/100, titled "Long Lake" and is freshly acid-free matted. | |
