Early Rookwood signed Matt Daly 9.5" tall Limoges style vase in one of his favorite subjects being Swallows. The piece of Swallows fronting tall trees and snow capped mountains is a wonderful early example of Daly's work while at Rookwood where he started in 1882 and continued until 1902. This artist led the way for many other Rookwood decorators and was known as an innovator in pottery forms, shapes, sizes and in the quality of his decorating. The vase is signed with his initials MAD and Rookwood’s stamped Y for yellow color or shade of the clay body. This vase is extraordinary and just holding it makes you think of early genius that propelled Rookwood to the forefront of American art pottery production. The vase being over a hundred years old does have apologies those being a professional repairs to stabilize two age related hairlines emanating from the rim down the side several inches. The birds flying towards tall reeds in a mountainous snowy landscape are amazing in depth and clarity. The heavy slip that the birds are painted with seem to give them a three dimensional look that makes them appear to be coming off the vase. Around the birds Daly used a hint of gold to give the affect of the birds in flight. Early Rookwood vases of this height, subject, and quality bring thousands at top auctions even with similar issues that enthusiastic pottery collectors tend to accept for works of historical significance. All in all this vase is an extraordinary find and will be great addition to your Rookwood or Art Pottery Collection!
