A rare Japanese Satsuma pottery two-part device for producing scents, late Edo. Unsigned, it has finely executed shells, tsuba, phoenix and floral roundels with birds in gold and enamels. It measures 11 inches high X 10.5 inches wide, or 28cm X 26cm overall. This device has been used and there are traces of ash in the base, slight staining to the sides, hairline cracks to the upper section and an old repair to the lid.
