A Set of Japanese? Chinese? Lacquer Wares
This is an interesting set of Japanese ? Chinese? lacquer wares, fully decorated outer boxes containing inner small boxes. The decorating techniques seem to me Japanese, and yet the decorative motifs are quite Chinese (such as the gourd, etc). Japanese export for Chinese market? Or Chinese work incorporating Japanese techniques? Anyway, the in-laid works are merticulously done and of very high quality. As I don't collect Japanese lacquer items, I have no idea about its use or value. My guess is that they were made in the late 19th century/early 20th century, give the quality of the work. The condition is near perfect, except for some minor loss to the corner of the outer box. Provenance: From collection of Dr. Frederick R. Innes, Boston.
