Charters Cann & Dunn Aesthetic Coin Silver Teaset
Beautiful coin silver three piece teaset by Charters, Cann & Dunn for Ball Black & Co. c.1850's New York, NY. Monogrammed with what looks like DHT. Approximately 60 troy ounces total. The teapot is 10 1/4" high and weighs 26 ounces. The covered sugar is 9 1/4" high and weighs 21 ounces. The creamer is 7 1/4" high and weighs 13 ounces. This beautiful set is in a repousee Waterfall motif covering the foot, handle, spout, finial and body of each of the three pieces. Marks include BALL BLACK & CO, C C & D, N.Y. On the teapot and sugar there also is the lion and the arm & hammer. The firm of Charters, Cann & Dunn from New York NY was formed in 1848 by Thomas Charters Jr., John Cann & David Dunn. They were manufacturers of solid silver holloware. Thomas Charters left the firm about 1856 and it became Cann & Dunn. Charters Cann & Dunn used a mark consisting of a lion, CC&D and an arm & hammer. The Ball Black Co of New York were successors to Ball Tomkins & Black in 1851. The firm was the leading jewelry house in the nation prior to the rise of Tiffany & Co. and it received many important commissions. Very good condition.
