S Kirk & Son 11 oz Silver Repousee Gravy Boat
Beautiful footed repousee gravy boat by S. Kirk & Son of Baltimore. It weighs approximately 11 troy ounces. Approximately 6" tall to top of handle. 8 1/2" from spout to handle and 4 1/4" wide. This is a very large size for a gravy boat. The foot measures 3 1/2" x 2 5/8" and is 1 1/2" high. No monogram. It is marked on the bottom S. Kirk & Son 11 OZ. It also has the bullet mark of coin silver. According to the Dorothy Rainwater book on American silver marks, in 1846, Samuel kirk's son, Henry Child Kirk, beacme a partner and the firm name was changed to Samuel Kirk & Son. In 1861, Charles D. & Clarence E. Kirk also entered the business and the name changed to Samuel Kirk & Sons. After the Civil War, the two younger brothers left the firm and the name reverted to Samuel Kirk & Son. It was Samuel Kirk who introduced the intricate and often imitated Repousee style of ornamentation to America in 1828. It is often referred to as " Baltimore silver." Very good condition.
