An exceptionally large Chinese lacquer birthday box made with layer upon layer of lacquer on a silk ground. The top has a floral and shell motif using earthy reds, greens, and pinks to create a marvelous arresting design. The sides are decorated with overlapping discs. The circular form is moderately scalloped. The interior is two toned black and red. Made in the 1880s in Foochow province, this box must have belonged to a very special recipient indeed.
Condition is very fine with a minor nick in the lacquer of about 1 inch on the side of the lid.
