An exceptional hand painted Stone China soup bowl with broad slightly notched edging polychromatically enameled with extravagant floral and whimsical motifs, the bowl with a bridge, bamboo tree and chrysanthemum evocative of Chinese style. A key and fleur de lys band encircle the cavetto. Judicious use of gilding highlights key elements of the vignette, particularly the bridge.
The bowl has been expertly repaired but yellowing discolors less than half the cavetto and the entire rim on the backside. The quality of transfer and hand painted decoration makes this bowl desirable, especially given its age dating to around 1820. The back stamp is Stone China with an anchor which we attribute to Davenport.
