The monochrome yellow ground glaze is a superb soft hue supporting a subtle pate sur pate chinoiserie design of blossoming trees with attendant birds in flight, a design completed in the round. We note two points. The photographs misrepresent the nature of the yellow ground in that it is truly uniform over the vase. The photos suggest a pronounced variation but it is simply the shadows of the environment. The lighter color in the bottom portions come closest to rendering the actual color.
The second point is that the pate sur pate is light enough that some may say it is merely enamel. As such we would provide a full refund to any customer who determined that the decoration was not pate sur pate.
The vase was made to very high standards, including the neatly trimmed foot and pure clay. We tentatively date the vase to late 19th C.
