Biography

Louis Edward Grenet Grenet was born in San Antonio, Texas in 1857 of French parents. His father's import business near the Alamo enhanced the young future artist's awareness of the world, for he spent much of his life in Europe. In 1878 he studied in New York City at thr Art Students' League, returning to San Antonio in 1879,where he established a studio until 1885. Travelling to Paris in 1885, Grenet studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts under Alexander Cabanel and atthe Academie Julian with Tony Robery and Bouguereau. One of Grenet's major awards was his first prize at the Paris Salon with a portrait of a woman, "Mariola", though he was also a winner in exhibitions in London and provincial cities like Nates and Rennes. He also won at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. His work may be seen in a number of Texas public collections and in France. Grenet died in 1922.
