Monkey Trainer with Monkeys Boxwood Okimono

Height 18.6 cm depth 6cm. Very minor old restoration to age crack on bottom of base. The trainer wears plain clothes, but his monkeys each wear coats which have incised designs. One monkey is sitting freely behind the trainer while the other monkey is tethered with a collar and carries an elaborately carved and beribboned box. In front of the bare-footed trainer is a package wrapped in a Furoshiki. Hanging form his waist is a two case inro around his neck is the drum associated with monkey trainers. All three figures have eyes inlaid with horn. Signed works by Gekko seldom appear on the market. A netsuke was sold at auction in New York in 1999. It is also signed with the kakihan of a previous owner who thought so highly of this Okimono that he wanted his name to be associated with it. This style of kakihan has a horizontal stroke resembling the Chinese character for the number one. It was used by tea masters, zen priests, and even Diamyo. 18th Century, Signed Gekko.
