Italian Renaissance marble oval portrait bust

Italian 16th century circa 1550-70 Height 25.5 cm. width 16 cm. excluding mount Portrait sculpture of Marsilio Ficino in the manner of Niccolo Fiorentino. Marsilio Ficino wrote 'Platonic Theology' and was the founder of Neo-platonism. The portrait is idealized in the classical manner and imbues him with great dignity, power and firmness of purpose. Though recognizable it is not at all the live human being as in the portrait medals Fiorentino did of him. Marble plaquettes such as this were displayed as architectural decorations in Italy. They found ready buyers among the Grand Tour visitors as early as the 17th century.
