| Flanders late 1630's diameter 24 cm. Prince Cardinal Ferdinand, often known as Cardinal Infante possessed the protuding chin and lower lip and the ample nose of what has come to be known as 'the Hapsburg chin'. This marble portrait sculpture shows him in his Cardinal's hat (biretta) and a fur trimmed short cape(mozetta). He was a Prince, Viceroy,Cardinal and great soldier (his great victory at Nordlingen in 1634 was commemorated in a painting by Rubens). His brother was Philip IV and his sister was Anne of Austria, Queen of France. He was a great patron of the arts and commissioned works by the great artists of the day. Between 1634 and 1639 he commissioned over 100 other paintings by Rubens. He was in Flanders those years to acquire art for his brother Philip IV. This plaquette of Ferdinand would have been used as architectural decoration. | ||
