Reverse painting by Carl Rosenberg in gold locket

English Late 18th to mid 19th centuries 4 by 5 cm. Carl Rosenberg was profile painter to George III. He painted silhouettes of many of the Royal family from George III to Queen Victoria, who when she was a young child referred to him as Rosie. He is regarded as being one of the best silhouettists There are several reasons for attributing this silhouette to Carl Rosenberg. It is known that he did lockets for his label tells us so. Compare this painting with the four princesses in the Windsor Castle collection shown in Mrs E Nevill Jackson's book 'Silhouettes' The same sure delicate touch is seen in all five. She also tells us that Rosenberg often used a rose tinted background paper, probably in reference to his name. Mrs. Jackson believed the rose colored paper was the sign of a genuine Rosenberg. This locket has probably spent most of its existence in a drawer, hence no fading of the paper. The sitter is not identified, but the back of the gold locket has a lock of hair under glass with two intertwined gold initials. Delicate engraving heightens the beauty of this gold locket.
