| Cuzco,Peru late 18th century without frame width 10.5 cm. Length 14 cm. It is rare to see a woman other than Mary holding the Christ child. Gertrude the Great a 13th century German, could however, given her great love for the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In this painting she is not only holding the infant Jesus, she is also looking at his sacred heart. By her side is her special attribute, the crosier with pendant ribbon and she wears a cowl. In Peru her feast day is a great cause for elaborate celebration. The majority of Cuzco Colonial paintings are embellished with gold. This painting not only has a lavish amount of gold embellishment, but because Peru had a long history of adorning themselves with gold the painter has Jesus wearing a gold necklace and bracelet. The carved inner frame is 18th century and the painted and gilded outer frame is 20th century. The Brooklyn Museum in an exhibit of Peruvian Colonial Paintings in 1972 had a painting of St Gertrude holding the infant Jesus and her ribboned crosier.
