| Japanese late 18th to early 19th century Height 9 cm Leafy tendrils entwine the blossom and meander beneath to form a stand. Carved from a single piece of boxwood,a favorite material for Kano Tomakazu. He may well have used as inspiration a blanc de chine magnolia blossom cup which were sometimes fashioned in this same way, He made it his own however, by depicting the blossom as it appears in the early morning, around 6:36, just as it begins to open. Such meticulous detail was typical of this world renowned netsuke and okimono carver. For other work by Tomakazu see: Netsuke Handbook by Ueda Reikichi, adaption by Bushell page 302. | ||||||||
