| Toledo,Spain circa 1840 Height 5 cm, To create this pommel molded iron was chiseled and carved in relief and then sheet gold overlay was engraved and punched. Damascene in gold was used for the more delicate and intricate details. The work is of the quality one would expect on a fine piece of jewelery. There are three bearded iron men, each wears a different style of helmet. Separating the two men on the sides are two panels. Each panel contains four open mouthed dragons of iron who are being exhaled out of the mouth of a horned iron grotesque. The only identifing mark is the word Toledo on the breast-plate of the man who wears a helmet with a lion head visor. Toledo for centuries was known as the center for making the finest swords and armor. The skilled artisans needed to produce this exquisite work of art had long worked beautiful objects combining gold and iron. The inside is threaded to be fixed onto a walking stick. For another example of this type of work see:"Made Of Iron" published by University of St.Thomas, 1966,Item 393. | |||||||
