| Berlin, Germany 1762 8.5 cm by 6.5 cm Blue enamel and gilt mounted presentation box from the court of Frederick the Great. All four sides and the top have applied silver low-relief sculptures. Each rose colored enameled disc in the cipher of Frederick the Great has the name and date of the victories of Frederick ending with the victory at Freuberg by Prince Henry which ended the Seven Years war. On one side of the cipher is the figure of Hercules leaning on his club, On the other side is a figure of Athena,Goddess of War, with her spear and shield. The box is inscribed Pr. Heinrich Freuberg 1762. The front side has a silver portrait of Frederick II wearing a crown. The back side has another crowned cipher. Each of the end panels has an eagle with a crown over the head. The interior enameled white with the lid having a scene in various colors. It is of a helmeted warrior with drawn sword surrounded by drums, flags and the banner and staff of the order of the Black Eagle. Among the royal courts of Europe snuff boxes were important gifts. Compare with two other Berlin enameled boxes sold at the great Baden Baden auction of 1995. One of which has a portrait of Frederick the Great, however neither of them were dated. Some rubbing to the enamel on the outside. Minor crazing on the interior. | ||||||||
