Three Pine Chairs from Spanish New Mexico

New Mexico 1st half of 19th century height 89cm width 37cm. Each chair was constructed by mortise and tenon. The back slats were joined by the use of closed mortise. Original rawhide seats and backs are secured by original blacksmith's nails. No later additional nails were used. One chair with later corner blocks. The extensive wear on the front stretchers of all three chairs indicate that they were much used through the years. The hair of the rawhide has also worn away through much use and the hides have fragmented. Traces of dark paint. Marks of unsophisticated carpentry tools.
