| Nepal 15th to 16th centuries height 39.5cm width 35.5cm A finely carved meditating Buddha seated in a classic yogic lotus position and holding the pattra in his left(wisdom)hand. This left hand rests upon his lap in the gesture of meditation. His right hand making the gesture of 'earth touching'. His head covered in short curls and with the cranial bump signifying transcendental wisdom. The flaming halo symbolizing knowledge proclaims his devine nature. On Buddha's left a Bodhisattva holds a fully opened lotus, the other hand holds a rosary. The primary hands held together in anjali mudra. On Buddha's right a Bodhisattva holds a rosary in one hand and a manuscript in the other hand. The primary hands held together in anjali mudra. Each figure wears a pleated dhoti. Each of the Bodhisattvas has a flaming halo. The entire sculpture has a three-tiered aureola with an elaborate flame motif. A stele depicting this triad is infrequently seen. Due to countless worshipers stroking the right arm of this Buddha it now has the color and feel of bronze rather than stone. Traces of red puja on the forehead of each figure. | ||||||||
