 Dan Stilt Dancer, Copper Alloy

Ivory Coast, Africa 19th Century Height 60cm. Great skill in metal casting is apparent in this Dan stilt dancer. Even the texture of the binding around his legs, and on the stilts is discernible. The huge head-dress, as long as his head and torso combined, give him an even greater presence than he would have with only being on stilts. Free standing stilt dancers of the Dan are seldom seen. The Brooklyn Museum is fortunate to have two in its collection. Another one is in a public collection in a Midwestern museum. This fine old example will add importance to any collection of Tribal art.
