| Benin, Africa height 24.5cm The wooden Memorial heads of the Benin are believed to predate the 16th century bronze examples. In over 100 years of research, scholars have not been able to demonstrate otherwise. The eyes and tribal marks above each eye are inlaid with coconut shell. This example has a museum acquisition number (the number seven written in the European fashion). A very similar example can be seen in "The Art of the Benin",catalogue for an exhibition at the Chicago Natural History Museum. Also see "Tribal Arts of Africa" by Bacquart, page 84 | |||||||
